Road across from the Strathcona Dam to close for four years

November 5, 2025

The road across the Strathcona Dam will be closed for roughly four years beginning Nov. 17. The closure is needed to carry out critical seismic upgrade work aimed at enhancing the dam’s safety and resilience. Road closure signs will soon be posted on either side of the dam, including off Highway 28.

Built in 1958, Strathcona Dam is one of three extreme consequence dams on the Campbell River system, says BC Hydro. Failure resulting from a seismic event could pose serious safety, financial, and environmental risks downstream. Standing 53 metres tall and stretching 500 metres long, it holds enough water to fill BC Place Stadium 216 times.
